Exploit people's need to believe in something
People have an enormous desire to believe in something. Become the focus of that desire by offering them a cause, a new faith to follow. Use words that are devoid of meaning but full of promises; emphasize enthusiasm over rationality and clear reasoning. Give your new disciples rituals to fulfill, asking them to sacrifice for you. In the absence of organized religion and grand causes, your new belief system will grant you immeasurable power.
